How to update minecraft?

I clicked on the link for the update of minecraft 1.6.2 and I downloaded it and it opened a new window and boom! I had the new minecraft so shut the window down and clicked on my desktop icon minecraft expecting it to be updated and it's still 1.5.2 ? what am I doing wrong do I have to completely re download minecraft and if so will I have to pay again ?

Nope you wont have to pay again. Just sign in to the minecraft website download the new update and start the new browser (its slightly different to the original)

You need to delete the old minecraft launcher. Sounds like you still have the old one downloaded and when you thought you were clicking on the new one it was actually the old one. Also the new launcher allows you to have multiple profiles meaning you can switch from let's say 1.5.2 to 1.6.1 easily. So make sure you have selected the right version before hitting play.

You have the new launcher so the one you downloaded is 1.6.2 and the icon on your desktop is 1.5.2, to play 1.6.2 go to your downloads folder (or wherever the new launcher went) and run and that one. It will be 1.6.2 if you don't want 1.5.2 just delete the launcher then create a new link for 1.6.2.
