Is this guy a friend or a aqquaintance?

Okay this guy and I don't know each other in real life, just on the internet. I often tweet to him and he'll occasionally reply back, we both know each other quite well and even though I've fallen out with some of his acquaintances he still seems calm about it. Though onetime some internet perv started asking me to have anal sex with me and this guy and his friend gave me advice and told me to stay clear of him, but I have no idea why he cared about me.

He's not a very open person and has his own circle of friends who all have strong interests like he does and I don't really know what to make of him.

I'm still wondering whether he's an acquaintance or a vague friend, what do you think?

you can be friends with someone you have only ever spoken with over the internet. i have several friends who are like that, i dont think that he did that purely because he cared about you, anyone more intelligent than the guy asking for sex would definitely advise you to keep your distance from him. Maybe if you tried talking to him more and got closer to him then he would be a lot more open with you. But in the long run, why do you really need to brand your relationship this guy either an acquaintance or a friend, at the end the day you will both still know each other and will both still talk so.
