Does anyone else notice how hypocritical it is to say you're an "Anti-conformist"?

This is the average "non-conformist":

"I'm anti-conformist. Vegan. Homosexual. Tattooed. Pierced. Body-modded. Straight-edge. I have an iPhone. I have a MacBook Pro. You can contact me on Facebook/Myspace/Twitter/AIM/MSN/BME/IAM…

Awesome, you're part of nearly EVERY trend that has blown up in the past 15 years. You're actually the EPITOME of conformity because all you are is a trend follower. Just blows my mind!

I agree. A true non-conformist does what isn't cool. They're the geeks and nerds of this world because they don't follow trends or what's in at the moment.

Anti-conformist is just another conforming stereotype now. There are ACTUAL anti-conformists out there, the ones who couldn't care less what brand of whatever they have or what people think of them.

Its like "Im such a non-conformist, that I'll just conform myself to a group of "non-conformists"

I think that depends.

Just because something is a trend doesnt mean they are conforming by participating in the trend.

I think what most people really mean is something more along these lines..

"i cant stand that my parents want to make me dress like i was growing up 2 decades ago, i hate the look the want me to have and the social groups they want me to fit into. So, I am going to choose this over here instead, and call myself an anti conformist because it is what I choose to do instead of conforming to the ridiculousness of my parents when it is the complete opposite of what I want to do"

Most teens cant verablize all that, but....

So I think its not a question of whether or not they are truly anti conformist in the literal since of the word and refuse to conform to anything. Rather, its a question of whether or not they are willing to conform to the specific things they are specifically being asked to conform to. Dress like this. Go to that school. Study this, or I wont pay for your school. Etc.
