What's a good social media topic to write about?

So, I'm a freshman in college and I have this writing assignment. It is on social media, and I'm not quite sure what topic to write about. I want one I can have a good argument with, yet be interesting. The paper will be in an article style format. I really don't want to do facebook, others have ones like twitter and formspring, wikipedia and aim. I'd prefer not to do the same topic as someone in my class, so a big list of ideas would be great

social networks don't necessarily have to exist online. Actually, social networks theory has its beginnings way before the internet existed. Even without facebook, wikipedia and twitter, there existed networks within societies that could regulate the flow of information, change the meaning of information and influence behavior. Perhaps you could look at these old school networks and what happens to them as a result of new media networks. Does the center of influence change because of online social networking?

Social media is a very broad topic and if you want to write something controversial that will land you an 'A' - try writing about the future trends of social media or predictions for year 2011. I'm sure you'll have a lot of them on the Web.

If you're going to write a paper, you should write about something you're interested in. Is there anything that you would like to understand about social media? Something you're curious about?

Did you notice any particular effects social media has over your friends, school, traditional media etc? Is there anything that annoys you about social media?
