It sounds like the kind of a place you might pick up a social disease.

However, wiki has this definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_market_economy

It sounds like a semi managed economy. Think the Fed and targetted inflation rates. Then REALLY think of the fed and targetted (as opposed to real) inflation rates....

Personally, it sounds nifty if it works. But it needs a lot of trust in the planners.

Thanks to DAR, I will call it by it's rightful name : Fascism. Fascism that de- emphasizes the military and para-military aspects of the economy. It still requires the use of extensive police powers, usually through easily adjustable regulatory practices; and needs the services of a secret police authority.

But, all and all, it is still 'Fascism with a Smile'

Its basically what most countries have to one extent or another. It is a free market economy regulated and moderated by the state. It has touches of socialism here and there but tries to keep the feel of free market capitalism. Its not really such a bad idea. The trick is that once government gets its claws into the economy, it never takes them out. And you can't stop them from digging their claws deeper until they kill the free market system they were trying to protect.
