if i make my friends list private to "only me"...then if i add someone on fb will it show that "(my name) and (so and so) are now friends" on my friends timeline?

Nope, as long as the settings are set to only me it will not show. You will be able to see it but no one else will be able to

If you set your account to "Friends only" no one except for you will be able to see it. But as you are doing this be sure not to make evrything on your profile private just the sections that you want.
