What does #name mean on twitter?

I keep seeing the # sigh with a name after it on my account #crazyman etc.. What does it mean and how can I use it to my advantage?

its kinda like a tag to find something easily like if someone tweets about the iPhone they'd be like i love the new #iPhone and people could easily search for the iPhone

it's a tag. The search engines on twitter look up tags when you post things. So if you wanted celebrity gossip, you would type gossip or something in the search engine thingy
