American History X - Media Impacts and Effects Strong vs. Weak?
I'm writing a paper for my Media Studies class, and I'm having a tough time distinguishing which media effects are strong and which ones are weak from the film American History X.

Here is a link explaining media effects: http://www.uky.edu/AS/PoliSci/Peffley/47...19-01).htm

I have the following media effects and examples from the movie:

Social Learning Theory
Ex.
1) Derek is sent to prison for being a racist Neo-Nazi and committing ruthless violence. - People learn the consequences of violence.
Derek changes in prison - Prison is a way to change racists/prisoners?
Danny concludes that racism isn’t worth it - I feel this is very passive.

Cultivation Theory
Ex.
Extreme violence between whites and blacks - there must be real life racial violence in the US like the movie.
2) Derek is raped in prison - Prison is a tough, cruel environment surrounded by rape and continued gang violence.

Selective Process
Ex.
1) Extreme Neo-Nazi racism and violence towards blacks - Racists will use the movie as justification - and - Anti-racists will use the movie as proof of racism and the unjustifiable acts that occur.

Priming
Ex.
1) The “heroic” image of Derek as a violent racist - Tension will grow as a negative effect of the movie, and violence may increase.

Hypodermic Needle/Persuasion
Ex. ?

If you have better examples of a model above, or if I left out a crucial model, please let me know!!

Also - my paper has to compare the strong and weak effect and determine which model most accurately explains the impact of the movie.

Thank you! Peace

did we watch the same flick? what made him so racist to start with? he didn't learn empathy in prison, he was betrayed and ganged rape. who helped him after the rape? the black dude. i was in so. calif. during those riots- alot of people turned anti black in disbelief of what they did to their own city, and the crimes preceeding the riots. they tried it in my city at the grocery stores and bam! the swat team turned fire hydrants on them. there's alot more to that pix that what you're absorbing
