if he's gonna unfriend me then why not just block me all together?
no he does not need to block me. i was gonna unfriend him though he beat me to it. lol

It should be enough that he unfriends you. Non verbal communication that he no longer wants to speak to you. Most people only block people if they are being harassed. Does he need to block you?
