Have you ever noticed on the right of your screen there are ads? Under some of them, you should see something like "John Doe Likes this" (John Doe being one of your FB friends. This is one way FB monitors you. It logs every "Like" and sells these to advertisers. The advertiser then uses your friends likes to try to get YOU to like the product or store.

To read more about this, go to the article I reference. It tells how FB makes money to keep their shareholders happy.

Nah! I don't agree with the above answer.

John doe likes this, jane doe likes this page. You may know John doe, is not the way to monitor users on Facebook. Actually it is the result of, you were monitored.

Monitoring works as, "How you behave on Facebook". Like, what you usually search for? Where your most of the friends are. Things you have mentioned in your bio. Pages you have liked.

For a really neat example,
let's google "32 inch LED tv" (make sure you are singed in Google)
Now open any of the result.
Alter your search query a bit a few times. So now, Google know you are looking for 32 Inch LED TV.

Next day you read a blog post about, how to make money online. (Blog has Google AdSense ads)
AdSense will show to ads for 32 Inch TV.

It's just an example. Facebook works just like this.

Hope this will help you!
