I know it sounds like a stupid question, but is it weird because they are on fb on their phone but they are not online in chat.

No it's always ok to chat with someone. Who cares about it if its a phone or computer

get used to it. the way technology's going, most things will be done on a handheld of some sort - a phone or a tablet. laptops will be temporary work centers, and desktop computers used as back up or for doing heavy work that is too hard on a small device.
