Because it expands your exposure to milllions of potential consumers and promotes user genrated content, which helps in the search ranking. It's a lot cheaper and easier to tell 5,000+fans about your new idea or product on FB than it is to pay thousands to millions on ad spots to reach consumers that only might be listening.
