DAVIE - Count Miami Dolphins quarterback Pat White among the NFL players mourning the death of Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chris Henry.

White and Henry played together for one season at West Virginia, and during their time together White felt it was a privilege that he got to know the real Henry, minus the bad boy imagine which plagued him during his college and professional career.

"The media made him out to be a criminal and a bad guy, but any question I had he answered. If I ever needed help with anything he helped me," said White, who redshirted his first season at West Virginia before becoming a four-year starter. "It's a sad situation, but hopefully he's moving on to a better place."

Henry died in Charlotte, N.C., Thursday morning, one day after falling out of the back of a pickup truck in what authorities described as a domestic dispute with his fiancée. Henry was in Charlotte because he was on injured reserve after breaking his left forearm in early November.

Police spokeswoman Rosalyn Harrington said homicide detectives have been assigned to the case but had no further information.

Dolphins defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni, who coached Syracuse from 1987 to 2004, labeled Henry as one of the players who helped Rich Rodriguez elevate West Virginia's football program into the realm of college football's elites.

"When Rich got there his first year he struggled. Then he got Chris Henry, and the whole thing changed," Pasqualoni said of Henry, who caught 93 passes for 1,878 yards and 22 touchdowns before entering the 2005 draft as an underclassman. "I know two of my last three seasons, he single handedly beat us… I had great respect for him as a player. Terrific athlete."

White said he saw Henry's eye-opening athleticism often during their 2004 season together.

"Every day at practice he did something to amaze me. That's just the type of player he was. It's hard for a [defensive back] to stop him. Even if you played the safety over the top he was going to get open," said White, who was dressed in all black Thursday. "We were teammates, and we have a saying, 'Once a Mountaineer, always a Mountaineer.' He's gone but not forgotten."
