Guys: is this how you treat a girl you like or a friend?

We have known eachother for about 6 months and in that time he has gone from aquantance to one of my good friends (I was already good friends with his best friend). He is recently single and he broke up with her after believing he couldn't be himself around her after discussing all of this with me weeks before they broke up. He tells me most things about himself and will text me and chat with me on social media (most of the time I start it but he will continue for a good hour or two).

He is always chatty and apparently he is flirty sometimes when talking to me or interacting with me (he will throw things with me or poke me occasionally). We went ice skating in a big group and he was acting funny and grabbing onto everyone's hips and pushing them but seemingly me most as well as showing off with the rest of the boys. At One point we made a long chain of us and he grabbed my hand and we awkwardly had intertwined fingers but he didn't let go quickly or change it.

He is a friendly guy and we are very similar in the way we think but I just want to know if it's a possibility - apparently he can be a little oblivious to female attention but my friends think he is flirty back - what do you think?

Ah go for it. You might as well. At the least, he'll be flattered. Besides, guys don't have the dreaded friendzone that girls possess. At least, not usually. He probably likes you.

Definitely go for it, there's no reason to not go for it. He gives you attention, likes being around you, and shared personal things with you. He clearly cares about you enough to entrust you with such things so give it a shot and enjoy what you can.

He is definately dropping hints, I mean, the part about explaining issues in his current relationship weeks before he breaks up is a big sign, and not starting convos but continuing for hours is a good sign of possible shyness but eagerness. Also taking opportunities for contact while not making it TOO obvious is another plus. Pay attention to how he acts when he is being flirty, does he grin and look away when he complements you? Does he maintain eye contact? Depending on his character (shy, straightforward) Those could be good or mediocre signs. Also, compare the way he acts to his other female friends to the way he acts to you. Most guys are thinking about their crushes nearly everyday, so if he likes you he'll be looking for hints.
