It's a crappy pun. The joke is poorly constructed overall.

The name Jim, which is a homophone of "gym", is short for James.

So the joke is that he's been away from the gym/Jim for so long that he still calls it by the long form name James rather than the (presumably more recent) nickname of Jim(gym).
