Because as soon as you open the chatbox or message box, it says you've read it even though we all know that you were just trying to get rid of the pesky notifications alerting you of the presence of someone you hate trying to be friendly with you. It's also possible that you offended them, or they opened your message and walked away to get popcorn because you wrote a fricken novel.
