Three girls I don't know added me on facebook and messaged me.?

This happened over the course of two weeks. I would get a friend request and I usually accept even if I don't know the person just for the hell of it. Doesn't matter too much to me. Then I'd get a message saying they liked my profile picture and want to talk more and then I'd get a phone number with it. Seemed a bit fishy to me, so I unfriended all of them. The accounts were also brand new like they wanted you to think this person just joined fb and is really looking for friends. Has anyone had similar experiences? Is this like junk mail, but for facebook?
