School read my Facebook?! HELP!?
Yesterday I got a detention for "swearing online" to a kid who doesn't even go to my school. I was swearing because I'm really stressed about my assignments I've got and I also said "omg I want to kill myself" (Didn't actually mean this, was just stressed) But the year adviser understands It was just an in the moment thing and I didn't mean it however some kids do mean it.. Anyway their new system reads all of our facebook messages on our school computer, is this an invasion of privacy or what? I asked him if he could see my facebook messages on computers other than my school computer he said he cant, is this correct, because its not hooked up to the school in any way? Also, if I get a new ipod and go on facebook that way they cant go through it right, because its not hooked up to school?

Your school had no right to see your Facebook and every person deserves privacy.Tell your parents or principal.

Unfortunately, in this time of cyber-bullying and with the amount of young people committing suicide over it, schools have taken to checking on the students' social networking accounts to see if they are having a problem or if they ARE a problem. Schools usually hand out papers regarding their policies when it comes to this, but many parents and students don't bother reading the information.

Being stressed is no excuse to say inappropriate things. I know you don't want to hear this, but since you tend to vent when stressed, it would be a good idea if you were to stay away from social media when you are stressed. Talk things out with a friend, or with your year adviser if there is a problem. Never put anything out there in writing that you may regret later.

You also need to think about your future. Employers and universities are looking into social media accounts of applicants. This tells a lot about a person. Sure, you could refuse to give them your information, but then, they could also deny your acceptance. This is also true for banks if you apply for a loan. Think about it.

I have linked an article that tells what could happen when you post too much or post inappropriately. Please take it to heart. You're young now, but, as I've said, you need to think about your future starting now.

Minors have no privacy rights. People can respect your privacy because they choose to do so but they have no legal obligation to do so. If you had any privacy rights your parents couldn't call your teachers to ask how you're doing and your teachers couldn't call your parents to report any problems you're having. Your mom couldn't ask your doctor about you, etc.

The only thing you can do is use your own computer for social networking. Even this is no guarantee of complete privacy. If someone reports that you are bullying them, poof!, your privacy disappears.
