Do hashtags (#) serve any purpose whatsoever on Facebook?
Or is it just "cool" to write long phrases with out any spaces? I thought it was just purposeful on Twitter.

You're right. They serve no purpose on Facebook. Although some people do have their Twitter account set up to automatically post their tweets on their Facebook account, so those hashtags are actual Twitter hashtags that are reposted on Facebook.

Hashtags have no use on Facebook. They only work on sites like Twitter and Instagram for category searches.
