why are certain people at the top of my fb chat list?
some i have chatted with and others i havent, but i have looked at their profile a couple of times. have they looked at my profile? is that the reason?

No, the reason they are at the top of your facebook chat list is that they are the people who you interact with the most. It has nothing to do with who views your profile or who's profile you look at.

Maybe..The order of. your chat list is determined by by your settings ie alphabetical, date / of last chat,
