Will people automatically see the pictures I take and edit on instagram?

So I've heard a lot about Instagram and how people love it, but if i take pictures can everyone automatically see the pictures I take? I wanted to get it just to edit some pictures on my ipod but I don't necessarily want people to see all of them. So am I able to use Instagram just to edit my pictures and have no one see? and would random people see it or my facebook friends or both? Is there a way I can prevent this? Thanks!!
