What happens when I change my Instagram username?

Will I lose my photos and the comments and likes on them? I read that I get to keep my photos, comments, and the number of likes on the photos, but when someone clicks on my old username, they are lead to an error page? Is that what happens? I'm a newbie when it comes to instagram.

It's best to keep an instagram name that you'll use for a long time. From experience if you change you name, and someone searches your previous name, it may redirect to your new profile page.
