Do people know I look on their instagram?

There's people I'll randomly look at on their instagram without following them, such as my ex. There's other people as well. I noticed though that most of these people have made their instagram accounts private all of a sudden. For example, I looked at my crushes account yesterday morning and today I noticed he made his account private. I don't like their photos nor follow them. I have a touch phone so maybe I accidentally follow them, however, I never seem to follow them or unfollow them so I'm not sure if it's coincidence or if I accidentally follow them.

Can people tell I look on their account? Or is it possible to follow them and unfollow them right away accidentally?

It is probably not possible
