How does the private instagram work?

I tried to follow a friend that has his instagram on private, so it says requested. I've read that in the private instagram the users have the option to deny or accept requests. This friend and I wernt really talking for a while so I do suspect that he wouldnt accept me. However it still says requested when I go on his page. Does this mean that he hasn't denied me and is just leaving the request there? If he were to deny me, would it still say requested or would it say follow?

if ur friend has accepted it will say FOLLOWING in a green box

if ur friend has denied it will say FOLLOW in a blue box

if ur friend has neither accepted nor denied it wil say REQUESTED in a grey box
