Why is there a gear symbol next to my boyfriends new relationship life event on his timeline?

my boyfriend and i put up a relationship status on fb and i cant see it pop up on his about me, but on his time line it shows hes in a relationship with me as a life event but there is a custom symbol next to it that I cant click on. it just says custom. did he hide it from other people or is that how its supposed to be? im sorry, i posted this already a few times but everyone says click it and I cant.

Ok, I don't know if this applied to relationship status or not, but every time a gear symbol appear next to a status or post, it mean the status/post is only visible to certain people. You can see it, then you're on his "allow" list. But people who's not on that list will not see that certain status/post. Maybe he doesn't want some people to see his relationship update?

You can do the same thing, like posting something then instead of it being visible to "Friends of Friends", you can change it, so not everyone on your friend list will see it.
