i guess the poet is telling and praising to his beloved
he may say i will be with you as long as you will be with me
he also want to say that he is in grief too

This is a recognition of the bitter truth that the object of his affection is not as ardent as he. She wants only friendship, he love. He will temper his passion (red turns grey) in order to just be with her. In the last two lines, he expresses that thought even more poignantly.
