he would be online but the green dot wouldn't be there. why? is that a setting?

If the Green Dot Is Not There That Means They Have Chat Set to Go Offline Either That Or Your Crush May Have Added you to The Show As Offline List

It's a common problem with face book chat...it happens to me also...the only way I know to conform if that person is online or offline is to send a message and wait and see if a small tick with seen appears bellow it...if that happens then yes he is online...just ignore the ggreen dots and enjoy your chat with him ;-)
