Annabel, aliens are real. Our top political leaders know it and so do most billionaires I am sure. In addition many average people know it because we have seen their ships, millions of people have seen them. I personally know a number of people who have seen the ships and twice when I saw them there were a number of other witnesses there with me. There are entire chapters of human history missing, we are a world with collective amnesia. The aliens have talked with me, and with thousands of others. They are preparing our world to wake up to our hidden stewards because we are approaching the technological sophistication level that they can not hide from. Our media and culture is being saturated with alien information, much of it fictional but based loosely upon reality in order to acclimate the public to the idea. There are major issues with the aliens because as you might expect, they consider humans their possessions and many people will be angry that democracy does not apply. We can not vote the aliens out if we don't approve of their activities. The problem we face is that their technology is a million years ahead of ours and they are not willing to hand it over because they do not consider humanity ready to handle the responsibility and it would compromise their position of sovereignty over this planet. Look at the primitive peoples of the central Africa jungles, after given AK-47s they quickly went on genocides with their neighbors who they were used to fighting, only with spears and clubs. It is a very complicated situation they are working on.

As a species and as a culture, we are a cusp of major socio-political upheaval as we transition ourselves from a culture based on concepts like religion, patriotism and personal greed into something more advanced like a cohesive Planetary civilization (also known by Michio Kaku as a Type 1 civilization). The threats we faced back during the Cold War and before are no longer really viable as we are now seeing the final integration of all nations into a geo-political hegemony and the threat of Mutually Assured Destruction by thermo-nuclear war vanishes completely. But being the fighting race that we are, there has to be a common enemy for us to rally against and since we are starting to no longer see our fellow man as an enemy, there is only one other focus for our collective animosity other than the threat of ecological disaster and that is the "Alien" threat. We are still centuries at least from being able to draw the attention of an alien menace and in reality it would be our attitudes towards xenos that would get us into trouble with them but we are still primitive creatures and require the focusing point to drive us a s a species.

It's mainly because people can't think of anything a bit more sensible to talk about

Acute stress reaction (also called acute stress disorder, psychological shock, mental shock, or simply shock) is a psychological condition arising in response to a terrifying or traumatic event. It should not be confused with the unrelated circulatory condition of shock.

"Acute stress response" was first described by Walter Cannon in the 1920s as a theory that animals react to threats with a general discharge of the sympathetic nervous system. The response was later recognized as the first stage of a general adaptation syndrome that regulates stress responses among vertebrates and other organisms.

unconscious[1] psychological strategies brought into play by various entities to cope with reality and to maintain self-image. Healthy persons normally use different defences throughout life. An ego defence mechanism becomes pathological only when its persistent use leads to maladaptive behaviour such that the physical and/or mental health of the individual is adversely affected. The purpose of ego defence mechanisms is to protect the mind/self/ego from anxiety, social sanctions or to provide a refuge from a situation with which one cannot currently cope.
