App is short for application. Applications are programs that do whatever the developer programmed it to do. Apps can run on laptops, if they were designed to. For instance, if you had a laptop with Windows 8 on, and installed a Win 8 compatible application on it, it would work. However, if you had the same laptop, but tried to install and Apple app on it, it wouldn't work without an app player, or some kind of emulator.
