I'm sorry I just can't see how some of these people with over 600 friends etc are really people you can have a friendship with. I don't mean everyone listed, but it seems like a good portion of people are added for show and to fool others into thinking you have all so many friends.

Only about 1/5 to 1/4 of my "friends" are people I've established an actual friendship with, the rest are either family, or classmates most of whom I only consider to be acquaintances.
However I'm not necessarily popular at my school; I'm nowhere near being an outcast, I mean I'm generally accepted by everyone. Just not considered apart of the "it" crowd or whatever.
It may be different for others but from what I've observed, most of the people with 600-1000+ friends are attained by just randomly adding mutual friends who they've never even spoken to.

So yes, I think no matter what your social status the majority of people's Facebook friends aren't people they share a genuine friendship with in real life.
