Why do we say hashtag instead of pound?
It took my 17 years to adjust to saying dot instead of point, how long will it take me to give up on saying pound?

its cultural and dependent on where you grew up. It is the pound sign to me, and not hashtag.

Pound has several symbols and abbreviations.

Lb, £, or ₤

Hashtag has come to mean one specific symbol. It is now used that way because it is specific and not ambiguous.
