Do you think facebook is a good way to contact people?
I don't understand it. I don't think facebook is any better than any other social network, they all do the same things, status updates, boring posts etc. If you have friends or family who live away from you then you can always send an email, write a letter and post it (what do you think people did before the internet?). Even a phone call.

I don't think it's worth having facebook just to contact friends and family, I don't think facebook is useful at all to be honest. Especially where privacy is concerned.
I've built my own social network, I don't mind talking via networks, but I do mind facebook.

Yes. You may be correct to some extent.
However, if you happen to have a closed group.

Facebook has been amazing for me when connecting with friends and family!

Social networking sites are different and are typically used for different purposes - which is why people tend to have active accounts on multiple sites.
For example, I find facebook to be a convenient way to chat (which has a different atmosphere than emailing for most people, making them feel and communicate differently), organize events, and connect with multiple people at once. For me, facebook is used to connect more with people in my physical life, while other networks such as twitter are used to connect with strangers as well.

But social networking sites aren't for everybody. I know some people who prefer talking on the phone and face-to-face rather than online, and are fine with emailing but not so open with instant-chats. It depends on personal preference how good each medium is.

The answer to that is 50/50!
In a way you are correct. People can send letters and call there friends and family. However FB is also a great tool to get to know people you recently met, show your friends and family pictures all in one, so you don't have to repetitively send it. You don't pay to go on FB, Whereas with sending letters or phoning you have to pay a small price (stamps, minutes on a phone, etc.)
There is a Privacy risk, you should make sure everything is only visible to friends and family, or friends of friends, so no "weirdos" get in or invade your privacy.
The fact that you mind FB is your personal opinion. I know some who feel the same, but the majority of people I know and met love FB. I find it a good tool to meet new friends and meet more people of a certain community or subculture, etc.

Facebook provides a way to keep in touch with a group of people all over the world, regardless of the location. One just needs access to the internet, which in some places, much more readily available than the mail. At one time, their was limited privacy settings but now it is possible to control permissions for each friend. I found it difficult to navigate around Facebook so I shy away from it.
