To friend or not to friend on FB?

So the first thing you need to know is that I am less than a pro in dealing with people socially. I am just not that experienced with it or good at it, I think. I work with a lot of people near to my age and I always want to try and be part of the circle. When people send each other emails of a cute photo or Friday greeting or something I feel very left out. We talk but if they start discussing plans about going somewhere that weekend it's like no one would ask me if I wanted to go, so while they do talk to me I always have this feeling like they don't like me as much or don't think of me as part of the group the same way and it really upsets me. Well, I am friends on FB with the one person I work with and apparently they are all friends on FB but should I send THEM requests? What if they don't like me that much and wouldn't want to friend me on there and do it just to be polite and shove me in some corner where they'll never see what I post, etc. I am still trying to understand the point of FB other than sharing funny pictures someone else made. What I've had enough of is always being the first to make the effort, looking like the one who wants to be included when maybe they don't want to include me and that's why they didn't, does it make me look desperate? Like if they're talking about something and I ask what they're talking about because I was away from desk or something... if they wanted to include me, would they do it automatically or have things changed so much that if you want in you have to force your way in? I don't know what to do, since to me I do not really have a friendship or relationship with these people outside of work, is it OK to bring them into my FB circle?
