What's the point of getting something trending on twitter?

If a topic is trending on twitter, a lot of people will see the specific subject which is trending at the moment. That results in more engaged from users who otherwise won't engage about the subject. So more people will talk about about the trending topic and that pulls in other people to talk about it.

For company's it can be good promotion but it can also be a disaster. If the trending topic is about a brand and the people are happy about it. It's is a very good promotion were discussion start so the company can engage in it, and probably give answers or advice.

But if there is a brand trending topic and the people are angry about it, you may and probably will lose a lot of customers. Because followers of the people talking bad about the brand will believe there friends more than the company words. So there will be a gap between the brand and the consumer which will be hard to repair.
