Go on to the friends page that you no longer wish to receive updates from and on the right side of the screen you will see a button called "subscribed", click it or scroll over it and you will see a list of option of what kind of subscription you want to their profile. If you don't want to be subscribed and get updates every time they post something, you may wish you choose the "unsubscribe" option which is the last one on the list.

You could possibly have them as a 'star' friend, that's when you get everything they do, from uploading a status or just changing their profile, all you do is go to their profile & change from 'star' friend to just regular friend, if it's not 'star' friend, then I really don't know.
