why do people feel better when they get more likes on instagram or facebook?

whether its likes on a picture or a status...why is it so important? it gives you that feeling of satisfaction and sadly i will admit i am also guilty of it too at times. im not saying i need to have a certain amount of likes however it does make me feel better when i get more likes. no rude comments please.
