If your profile is public, you will show up on the feed of anyone you are friends with already on FB. It's not unusual to get a lot of friend requests when you first join. You don't have to accept them.

Its normal, In fb always strangers and unknown people like to be your friends. So that they can gossip about your where abouts with your mutual friends.
