Facebook Profile Pic Private?

I set my profile pic to private. When I type in my email address and mess up my password, the screen comes up and it shows a box with an x in it with my email address beside it. Does it do that because I have it set to private?

Also, if I set it to private, when people search me, do they just see the grey, basic head picture that facebook sets to people without pics?
so, no matter what setting I set it on, if a stranger searches me, they will always see my picture?
