Who pays Zuckerburg who invented free membership facebook?

I'm rather curious if Zuckerburg (forgot his first name) actually makes money off of Facebook, he must do since he invented it, if so, who actually pays him? He will have had to pay out for copyrighting it or patenting it (which is it?) he will have had to pay out to someone to create the facebook site and settings in the first place, and then membership is free, so who actually pays him?
