Social media marketing is more useful for branding than for Web site traffic. I have seen many big claims about the greatness of SMM, but not too many people are willing to provide numbers to back up those claims.

I have access to the Web stats for quite a few sites, and the best performer does about 5 percent of total traffic from Facebook. That's pretty small compared to the 80 to 90 percent of total traffic from search engines.

I'm glad you asked, 99% of people will tell you all about the amazing numbers using Social Media Marketing like Facebook and how you will be able to create loads of brand awareness and sales & bla, bla, bla, but none of them have actually done any research on Social Media Marketing. The truth is Social Media Marketing is a hard sell according to a study conducted by the IBM Institute for Business Value only 23% of all Social Media users use Social Media to interact with brands. And they usually have some pre existing relationship with the brands they use Social Media to Connect with. The New York Times also wrote another article out lining the considerably large problems that people are having attempting to use Facebook as a marketing tool, by the way both articles were written and published in 2012. Basically it all comes down to intent most people who use social media like facebook are intending to Connect with family and friends or entertainment not buy stuff or look for brands & business. That is why as a business search (as in search engines like Google) is so much better to market to because of the intent of the user e.g. if the user types in "hairdresser in New York" their intent is to find a hairdresser in New York.
Is it in Social Media best interests to have you believe they are a great marketing tool? Yes because they get major advertising dollar for it.
Is it in the best interest of social media marketers to have you believe Social Media is a great marketing tool? Sure it is, an entire industry has been spawned out of it.
Is Social Media Marketing all they are telling you it is? The statistics and facts say no.
I'm not telling you not to bother with a facebook business page, I'm just saying be aware of the facts so that you don't waist to much of your time and money on a unreliable marketing tool.
Also since the introduction of the Panda algorithm in 2011 social media does have some effect on your SEO rankings so things like facebook likes and Google+1 can help but if you really do your research on Social Media Marketing you will find it's not all it's cracked up to be.
