What kind of "equipment" is good for a person who works in social media ...?
My job duties include monitoring & updating my company's social media. We're a small organization, so we don't have around the clock staff like a big corporation would have. However, if a situation does develop that that needs instant & constant vigilance, I need to be able to respond. I also work traditional media & other PR/Communication duties. What do you think would be the best investment: smart phone, netbook/tablet or something else?

Forget the equipment and invest in some good social media tool like Radian6, Hootsuite or Simplify360.

These tools have lots of features that save more than 90% of your time. Choose the right tool and use it wisely. Success if urs.

Great Social Media Tools:

1. Tweetdeck (scheduling, managing and sending posts, monitoring your brand)
2. bit.ly (url shortener)
3. SocialMention.com (Free Tool to monitor social mentions and tone of the social universe regarding your brand)
4. I would suggest some sort of social media analytics tool but since you are a small company you probably can't afford most of them.

1 through 3 should be a good start for now.

With you asked question i assumed that you want to monitor, engage and update your Social Media pages whenever you want and wherever you go. Am i right?

If I'm right then don't wait go ahead and purchase an Android 2.2 Cell Phone, that will come with already installed applications like: Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, Buzz, etc... you can install tons of applications from the "Market Place", update and monitor your Social Media accounts while lying on bed, watching TV, gossip with friends & family. I'm also using it and now i can give more time to my work and family. Still you need more information don't hesitate to ask i'm here to help.

A netbook can be quite useful. You can take it anywhere you go and easily access any social media site you need to access. I have one and I am also in social media.
