The European powers were seeking raw materials from the underdeveloped lands of North and South America, Africa and Asia. The raw materials were used to stimulate economic development in the European countries. The conquered lands served as markets for the developed nations of Europe with their trained labor forces. This is called mercantilism. The competition between the Eurpean nations, like Spain, Portugal, England, France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany for the most valuable raw materials led to conflicts. An example of this is the series of wars between England and France for North America, ending in 1763. Meanwhile the unplanned growth of industry and large cities in Europe led to slums, poverty, conflicts, and social problems between rich and poor. I hope that this has been a help to you.
