Novice Facebook question?

On your own page, it shows your friends on the right, and it either has a green dot, or it shows minutes or hours, or there's neither. (nothing).....what do they all mean?

That's your Facebook chat. Click on one of the names to chat with them. Green means they are online/available. Mobile Device and then mins/hours means they have the FB app on their device and when they were last online. And nothing means they are completely offline, but you can still message them. Not sure if they still do "away".
