If it's from the opposite sex, it's generally considered flirtatious. From a friend, it's kinda just like hi. There's no defined meaning. Just take it however you want.

some use it as a signal to tell you to add them or inbox them.
mainly its just to get your attention.
or if its from a friend, then its to annoy you.
