How do you write something on someone's twitter?

I just got a twitter and I need to write something on someone's twitter to ask someone how to do it. Its probably a really obvious answer, but could someone just give me instructions?

Just do direct messaging. Type "d" before his/her username then type your message.

example direct message to Alex79:

d Alex79 My first blog is online now.

if you dont mind if everybody else sees your tweet to the person all you have to do is put an @ before their user name, then type what you want to say...ex------> @conanobrien how are you?
