facebook birthday reminders of people I don't know?

I like the facebook birthday reminders of my friends, but recently facebook started adding birthday reminders of people I've never heard of before. As far as I can tell they're not friends-of-friends, either (though an exhaustive search wouldn't be feasible). They're even popping up in my calendar!

I have privacy settings on fairly high. Only friends have access to my information, not friends-of-friends, and certainly not everyone. The only setting I have with "everyone" as the option is for contacting me (I didn't want to preclude old and new friends from contacting me). Is this why I'm now getting birthday reminders for random people? Where does it end? After all, there are billions of choices to go...

How do I stop this? A new name just popped up today. It's Kim Sannar's birthday this week. Don't care? Neither do I!
