it actually lasts along time I have 2gb also and I have never gone over but if you use wifi then it doesnt count against you and iMessages are just SMS but its free

Messenger uses your web data allowance but not SMS, which goes over the network like a phone call would. 2GB should last a month or two for what you describe if it doesn't expire after a month (most plans are monthly), unless you start watching YouTube etc. which will use it up VERY quickly.
