Facebook lists privacy?

Similar to Google+ circles, facebook now has lists, a couple are default and some you can create...
customizations are still limited but i was trying to group my friends, but every damn friend i added to a list like "friends" (name of the list created) got a notification that i had added them to this list, was this a mistake?
shouldn't my lists be private?
if not is there account settings that can change this for me i couldn't see one

"Facebook" and "Private" are contradictory terms. Facebook is public domain... there is Nothing private about anything that is public, reguardless of the terms used to convey "privacy".
