Do you think its better to socialize on the internet or in real life?

Since i'm a shy person I socialize better on the internet, such as facebook myspace and instagram, but now i'm thinking that its a waste of time, I think that it is better to get out there and meet new people and make friends in real life not on faceboook. What do you think?

I'm too awkward to socialize in real life.
I have complete strangers try and talk to me every time I go to the gym and I usually don't say more than a handful of words. I can't even make eye contact. :/
