Tom, any authoritarian government would be afraid of social media like FB, Twitter, etc. because it is very easy to form opinions against the rulers and create mass movements! The ruling party in India has also tried to curb these electronic media but the strong movement against the party forced them to shelve this move. The freedom of expression is enshrined in our constitution and any attempt to curb this would be met with very strong mass movement.

It is because china is afraid that their people will see how brutal their government is to them. Just try to Google "Tiannamen Square Massacre". The government are nothing but control freaks. It is ridiculous what they are doing to Tibet right now. I recommend using a VPN.

It is because when rumors spread around these social media that are against America's best interest, the US government can track down those people who spread the rumors, and very soon, those people become vanish from the world without anyone's knowledge.

China, on the other hand, does not have an authority to request these foreign social media to reveal the information of the users, and thus, when rumors spread around these foreign social media that are against China's best interest, and if China did not censor these foreign social media, rumors could damage the social stability in China.

Therefore, China has done a right thing to censor these crazy foreign social media.
